Vans Custom Culture: Music

These are shoes I helped conceive and make, collaborating with a few other students for the Vans Custom Culture contest. We didn't win, if you were wondering. We're pretty sure the "judges" never even saw it. People had to go online and vote for 20 shoes out of over 100 before that happened. Can anyone say blind narrowing of the competition?

But anyway, the theme here is music. Here's a caption my teacher wrote for the Facebook page.

Music Theme- JAM SESSION

The inspiration of this shoe is the blending of instruments in a jam session. This shoe is taking the most graphic elements of the instruments that we love and making them merge into one esthetically pleasing shoe! We replaced the shoelaces with guitar strings to give the look of a working guitar. The rim of the sole has vibration and music notes that tie into the black and white of the piano keys, and reminds us that feeling the music is essential. The heel of the shoe reads, “Don’t go…silently”.
The contrast between the texture of the wood neck of a guitar and the metal pegs, the color gradient of the body of the guitar versus the ivory and ebony of the piano keys, are symbolic of the fusion of instruments in a jam session.
